American Soldier: Ian Fisher

This photo is the most powerful because you can see the struggle he has and all the gear he has had to use that helped lead to his struggle. There seems to be a lot of emotion in his stance.

All the images in the articles show him from end of high school to marriage after being in Iraq. The photos are all in chronological order that showcase his life for the time it was recorded. Each one is a different moment that leads to the next.

The captions enhance the photo by expressing the emotion of what is going on the photo and telling you the story of why. A picture can have a lot of interpretation, but the captions make sure that the emotion and story isn't mis-told/misinterpreted.

Ian Fisher said goodbye to his loved ones when he joined the military after High School, an he had weeks of hard, painful training, and he was sent off to Iraq. He happily married his girlfriend once he returned home.

The verbs are normally present tense.

  1. The captions are probably 2 sentences on average.
  2. The first sentence explain what's happening in the moment of the photograph.
  3. The second sentence is more information to explain why that moment is happening.
  4. The third sentence mainly adds extra information that finishes up the caption.
  5. A lot of captions include quotes.
  6. Some captions do have 4 sentences.
I think it's possible to tell a story just through photos and captions because it's like a movie, the photo shows you what's happening and the caption explains whats happening.

You should still bother righting a story because the story can let you give all these details that you weren't able to capture in the moment, but it's still necessary or would be good to tell. The story can inform the readers more.

Africa & Abandoned Theme Parks

AFRICA
  1. I think that Nick Brandt has some very good looking photos and his thoughts are interesting. I do think that capturing those photos are important however I don't think it is as urgent for some animals as is it others. I also think that if he is taking photos of the animals because 'man is going to ruin it' then learning a bout the animals spirit is unnecessary, but the photos do look cool with that mindset.
  2. This photo is my favorite because it follows rules of thirds and the background looks astonishing with the giraffe in front of it.
  3. The rules of composition in this photo are mainly rule of thirds and simplicity because you immediately know what the subject is.
  4. Nick Brandt does not use a telephoto lens, so he has to get close to the subject. This is important because it makes his photos dangerous and he has to be careful as to not get attacked or scare away the animals.
  5. Nick wants to take these photos because he wants to capture the animals before they are 'destroyed by man' and also wants to capture their 'spirits.'
  6. He hopes that these photos will make humans as a society not want to kill off or relocate these animals from there natural habitat because he wants these photos to show us they have as equal of a right to be there as we do to be here.
  7. "I had a vision in mind: I wanted to create an elegy, a likely lat testament to an extraordinary, beautiful natural world and its denizens that is rapidly disappearing before our eyes. I wanted to show these animals as individual spirits, sentient creatures equally as worthy of life as us."    -Nick Brandt, PhotographyOffice
  8. Brandt's new focus of photography is to show people the beauty of the world before we ruined it, by setting up photos from his recent focus and setting up that photo in an area it looks like it fits.
  9. The process of making these photos was printing photos in California, shipping them to Kenya where they constructed/place the wooden/steel frame.
  10. I think this might make people notice what the area could have looked like before and not destroy areas as much as they do.
  11. These new images made me feel sad that these animals are no longer roaming as many areas as they should be.

ABANDONED THEME PARKS
  1. I think going to visit the Six Flags in New Orleans wold have good photo oppurtunities because I could get photos of the rusty rides that are in other locations. It would also be cool to shoot there because there have been movies shot in the Six Flags location and that would be cool to see the areas that were in the films. Six Flags is also an extremely well known amusement park and getting a look at an abandoned, creepy, rundown Six Flags would be really interesting, especially if compared to not rundown ones.
  2. Some other unusual places for a photographer to shoot at would be places like

Mural Project Preview

The few ideas I have for the mural project are life-as in trees, grass, landscape, etc.-, people, and technology-as in cars or other modes of transportation and or computers, phones, etc.

I will have to be thinking about shutter speed, aperture, and ISO.

I think we should use photoshop to adjust the photos, and then we can either arrange them in google slides or draw, but I think it would be best to do it all in photoshop.

Three Pillars of Photography

F2.8:

F16:
  1. The pupil is most related to aperture because they both control the amount of light let in.
  2. The smaller the aperture f stop, the higher the aperture light.
  3. Aperture affects depth of field because it has a shallower depth of field depending on the lower the f stop, f/2.8 has a shallower depth of field than f/16.
Fast Shutter Speed:

Slower Shutter Speed:

1.
a. I would want a medium shutter speed
b. I would want a medium shutter speed
c. I would want a super fast shutter speed, but not too fast that it becomes extremely dark.
d. I would want a pretty fast shutter speed.
e. I would want a slow shutter speed to look like people are rushing in as fast as they can.
f. I would want a fast shutter speed to capture the ball frozen in the air.

a. I would want a slower shutter speed
b. I would want a slower shutter speed
c. I would want a medium-fast shutter speed, or I would change the aperture and make the shutter speed fast.
d. I would want a medium shutter speed.
e. I would want a slower shutter speed.
f. I would want a medium-fast shutter speed.

2.
  • Auto-Shutter Speed, ISO, and Aperture are chosen without any input
  • Shutter Priority-You only choose shutter speed
  • Manual-You choose all settings.

ISO 200:

ISO 3200:

ISO 6400:

1. The advantages to shoot at a dark area with a high ISO is the ISO makes the photo brighter and makes things easier to see.
2. The author suggested that you should only use a low ISO when the conditions (lighter) around you are good because it is not good to have a low ISO but have shutter speed or aperture to high/low.
3. The author suggested in you should only use a high ISO when the conditions around you (darker) give you no other choice.

The aperture settings on this link are Aperture with a slider and it shows you how the depth of field and exposure change when you change the aperture.
The shutter speed is also just a slider that shows you how you change the motion and exposure when you change the shutter speed.
The ISO is also just a slider that shows you how you changed the noise and exposure by changing the slider.
