My Favorite Cover

Website Description
It’s hard not to be attracted to this cover of Surf featuring a young boy poking his tongue out at the camera. It is, in the words of Wedge & Lever, “sophistication that does not take itself too seriously.”
My Description
This cover is good because when you look at the boy on the front it sparks your curiosity. You look at it and wonder why this boy, who is enjoying his time on the beach, is on the cover on a magazine. His face, expression, and action all draw you in because you want to know more about who he is, why he's on the cover, and where he is. You then examine more of the cover and notice how there are locations and headings and you get even more drawn in due to curiosity. This cover has everything a cover should have; an interesting photo, headings, the colors stand out, and it shows the joy of the boy with his expressions.
Magazines Part II
Four Main Types of Cover:
- Image Based
- Illustrated Based
- Typed Based
- Concept Based
Image Based-
Image Based is the most used magazine cover that mainly consists of a person staring at the camera. There are many other ways to do it, but the most used way is of a celebrity to draw peoples attention. There are several ways to make an image based cover but using a well-known subject is the most common, most used, and reliable on a subject.
Illustrated Based-
Illustrated based is not as common as Image Based but is good for showing something out of the ordinary and/or funny. There is a lot more options for an illustrated cover due to the fact that you can illustrate anything out of the blue, and many magazines use computer generated illustrations making it much more easier than persuading a subject to pose or positioning someone/thing into the perfect pose.
Typed Based-
Typed Based is more common than illustrated covers but is still rare. Typed based covers are the best option if you want to present something shocking or send a message to your reader that helps draw them in. This may be the easiest base to put on paper, but may be one of the hardest based if you're not talented at sending a shocking, eye grabbing message through only words. The way you present a typed based cover can make it look powerful enough to be flying of shelves.
Concept Based-
Concept based is a mixture of the other forms of covers to make an interesting, funny cover however concept based is also rare. These covers are, in my opinion, the most attention stealing covers because they make you put two and two together making an amazing light shine in your readers head that makes the reader want to read more.
